Women & Fertility

All most all women dream of getting married, becoming mothers and raising families. Having babies is an important factor in the life of women and their sense of purpose or fulfillment seems to come from the fact that they get pregnant and give birth to a baby. So naturally when the couple get married, everybody expects them to announce their pregnancy soon after and if this doesn’t happen for any reason, they tend to get questioning glances if not direct questions.

Quite often couples keep trying to have babies but are unsuccessful. After trying for a number of years they seek medical help. Quite often the problem could lie with the man with his sperm count and hence he would have to under go treatment. If the problem lies with woman, there can be many reasons like blocked fallopian tubes or irregular ovulation.

Irregular ovulation is a problem faced by many girls right from the onset of puberty. But in most cases they tend to ignore this problem and wish it away. Only after marriage when they fail to conceive do they seek doctor’s assistance. Of course medical science has very effective treatments to treat this ovulation problem in women.

Normally the doctors prescribe Clomid or Clomiphene citrate to treat the fertility problem and induce ovulation in the anovulatory women. Clomid is a selective estrogen receptor modulator known as SERM which when consumed increases the production of gonadotropins and stimulates the ovaries in female.

In a normal physiology of a woman’s body and hormonal cycle, seven days after the ovulation, the body consists of high levels of estrogen and progesterone that inhibit GnRH, FSH and H at the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. If at this time the fertilization does not occur, then the corpus luteum disintegrates due to lack of beta-hcg which would have been produced by the embryo and causes menstrual discharge.

In case of treatment, Clomid is administered on the 2nd day of menstrual cycle. At this time the FSH level increases in the body causing growth of follicles which in turn produce estrogen that circulates in the serum. Clomid inhibits the action of this estrogen on the pituitary by binding to estrogen receptors. As a result when the estrogen receptor numbers decrease in hypothalamus, the body perceives a low level of estrogen and the GnRH secretion increases, thereby increasing the pituitary gonadotropin –FSH , LH also. FSH level in turn causes growth of ovarian follicles and subsequently rupture of follicles resulting in ovulation.

Doctors are able to time the entire cycle and advise the couple to try and conceive during the ovulation time. Thus with Clomide treatment most women become successful in conceiving within a few months of beginning their treatment.

However Clomid like all other drugs does have minor side effects. More importantly women should never resort to self medication of Clomid and should always use Clomid under medical supervision and guidance only. Clomid usage can result in hot flushes, blurred vision, headaches and discomfort in breast. It is always better to inform the doctor when and if you come across these side effects while consuming Clomid. Consumption of Clomid is said to increase the chances of conceiving of twins.

So women today do not have to loose their sleep over their infertility issues. Effective treatment is at hand.
